Where Strategy, Story, and Self-Discovery Meet Evidence-Based Practice

At Mindful Mage Counselling, therapy is a quest — not a script.

Whether you’re navigating stress, identity shifts, relationship tension, burnout, or emotional overwhelm, our work is about more than insight. It’s about changing patterns, gaining skills, and rewriting your story in a way that honors who you are becoming.

We offer trauma-informed, culturally sensitive, and narrative-based counselling services in Calgary and across Alberta (online/virtually). Sessions are practical, creative, and designed to meet you where you’re at — even if that’s “I don’t know what I need yet.”

๐Ÿ” What Counselling at Mindful Mage Counselling Actually Looks Like

Counselling at Mindful Mage Counselling is semi-structured, but never rigid. Every session adapts to your progress, personality, and goals. Whether we’re exploring deep-rooted patterns or building day-to-day coping strategies, this process is collaborative, relational, and grounded in respect.

Mindful Mage Counselling specializes in:

  • Anxiety therapy – for overthinking, avoidance cycles, and emotional regulation
  • CBT for depression – structured tools to address low mood, inertia, and hopelessness
  • Burnout therapy for professionals and students – regain energy and redefine balance
  • Self-esteem and identity counselling – especially for LGBTQ+, neurodivergent, and story-based clients
  • Relationship therapy – explore conflict, attachment, and deeper emotional safety
  • Gaming-integrated and pop-culture-informed therapy – for clients who connect through narrative, metaphor, and RPG-style learning

๐Ÿง  Evidence-Based Frameworks We Use

We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all therapy. We try to tailor the tools to fit you, rather than you fitting the tools. That would not be a two-eyed seeing approach. Here’s a closer look at the modalities we blend to support your growth:

๐Ÿ’ก Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Challenge unhelpful thoughts and create new behavioral pathways. It’s just a fancy way of saying “Changing your thoughts.” CBT is ideal for anxiety, perfectionism, depression, and imposter syndrome. You’ll gain tools for noticing, disrupting, and rewiring old thinking traps.

๐ŸŒŠ Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Learn to regulate emotions, set effective boundaries, and navigate distress without melting down or shutting down. Particularly helpful for clients who feel “too much,” “too numb,” or caught in intense relational dynamics.

๐Ÿงพ Narrative Therapy

The stories you’ve been told — and the ones you’ve internalized — shape your self-concept. We explore identity, power, meaning, and values so you can re-author your life from a more authentic and empowered perspective. We use media (games, comics, movies, graphic novels/manga/webcomics, MMORPGs, etc.) as metaphors.

๐Ÿง˜ Mindfulness-Based Strategies

We work with your nervous system, not against it. Grounding, breathwork, somatic awareness, and moment-to-moment reflection help you relate differently to fear, stress, or shutdown.

๐ŸŽฒ Therapeutically Applied Role-Playing Games (TA-RPGs)

TA-RPGs turn therapy into an active, story-based experience. Using structured RPG scenarios, clients practice emotion regulation, social decision-making, and identity building through characters and fantasy frameworks. Great for neurodivergent clients, teens, and creative adults. Think of a D&D or Pathfinder campaign specifically designed for group therapy. This modality is currently offline (as of May 10, 2025) due to limited office space.

๐Ÿงฉ Psychoeducation & Lifestyle Coaching

Inspired by Dr. K (Alok Kanojia), Lynn Lyons, and Dr. Michael Yapko, sessions include insight into how the brain, relationships, and digital habits influence mood and motivation. We use real-life strategies to reduce avoidance, reintroduce structure, and build emotional flexibility. Some psychoeducation segments will be recorded for YouTube and possibly other platforms (depending on my schedule), as videos can offer a vast AOE than individual and group counselling sessions.

๐ŸŽฏ Who We Work With

  • Young adults and students managing performance stress, identity shifts, or loneliness
  • Neurodivergent clients (ADHD, ASD, AuDHD) who benefit from structure, flexibility, and affirming support
  • Couples navigating conflict, disconnection, or life transitions
  • LGBTQ+ clients exploring gender, identity, and belonging
  • High-functioning clients who feel burned out, emotionally dysregulated, or stuck
  • Narrative, creative, and “nerdy” clients who thrive with symbolic and metaphor-driven frameworks

๐Ÿšง Future Projects & Practice Growth

At Mindful Mage Counselling, growth isn’t just something we ask of clients — it’s what we commit to ourselves. The work we do here is always evolving.

What’s Ahead:

  1. Improving Quality of Services
I’m continually investing in professional development through advanced workshops, consultation groups, and skill-based intensives.

  2. Cultural Training with Elders
To strengthen my Two-Eyed Seeing approach, I’m actively seeking Elder consultations in the Calgary area to deepen my understanding of Indigenous healing models and community protocols.

  3. Advanced Modalities
    Future training includes:

    • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

    • ART (Accelerated Resolution Therapy)

These tools will allow us to support trauma processing with greater precision and safety. Currently, Fox is NOT certified for EMDR and ART.

  1. Larger Office Space for TA-RPG Groups
MMC currently hosts up to 4 people. A future goal is to secure a space suitable for small-group TA-RPG therapy (up to 8 players), expanding accessibility for social development, emotional rehearsal, and collaborative problem-solving.

  2. Group Therapy Training & Facilitation
We aim to offer small group workshops and therapeutic campaigns in the future. Skills training and community building will become key parts of our expanded offerings.

๐Ÿง™‍โ™‚๏ธ From Fox: Why I Do This Work

Therapy is more than a profession — it’s a sacred space of re-alignment. For many of us, especially the neurodivergent, emotionally intense, and story-driven folks, therapy often hasn’t felt like it was meant for us.

So here at Mindful Mage Counselling, we change that. With humor, structure, metaphor, and meaning. With cultural humility and curiosity. With patience and pace. I honestly don’t know how this will grow into the future as the field of psychology evolves. I hope to be part of that change, especially in uncertain times.

You don’t need to be “ready.” You just need to start where you are.
