FAQ

- Mindful Mage Counseling -

What should I expect during my first counselling session?
Your first session involves an initial assessment where we'll discuss your concerns, goals, and any relevant history. This is also an opportunity to establish a comfortable relationship and ask any questions you may have.

How do I know if counselling is right for me?
Counselling is beneficial if you're facing challenges like stress, anxiety, depression, or relationship issues. An initial session can help you and me determine if counselling is appropriate for your needs.

Can I receive counselling if I am outside of Alberta?
As much as I’d love to help everyone, my services are limited to folks within Alberta due to provincial regulations. If you’re outside Alberta, let’s discuss some alternative options or referrals.

What is the cancellation policy?

Life happens! Just give me a heads-up at least 24 hours in advance if you need to cancel or reschedule. It helps keep things running smoothly, and it saves you from a cancellation fee.

Can I bring someone with me to my counselling sessions?
Bringing a support person can be helpful, but let’s chat about it first. Sometimes an extra person can change the dynamic, so we’ll decide what’s best for you. Also, please keep in mind that the more people in the room we have, the harder it is to keep conversations confidential.

How do I prepare for my first session?
No need to overthink it—just come with an open mind and maybe a list of things you want to work on. Arriving a bit early helps with paperwork, and we’ll take it from there.

Are there any group therapy options?
Group therapy might be an option if you’re interested in connecting with others who are in the same boat. We’ll discuss whether it’s the right fit for you during our sessions. I am currently in training for group therapy, thus, this option will not be available at the moment.

What if I have an emergency outside of counselling hours?
If an emergency pops up when we’re not in session, it’s best to contact emergency services or head to the nearest ER. I’ll also make sure you’ve got a list of crisis resources just in case.

Can You Prescribe Medication?
As a Registered Therapeutic Counsellor (RTC) in Alberta, I am not licensed to prescribe medication or diagnose mental health conditions. If we both think medication could help, we can discuss referrals to someone who can.

How Long Does Treatment Last?
The duration of treatment is like a good book - length is irrelevant to quality. Most clients engage in weekly therapy sessions across several months. Your treatment and timeline will be tailored to your individual needs, or as your story unfolds.

Do You Accept Insurance?
Currently, I do not accept insurance. All sessions are self-pay.

Can I Book Online?
Yes, all sessions are booked online due to my current setup. I do not accept walk-ins, so please schedule your appointment in advance.

What Are Your Hours?
Here’s when you can find me:

  • Mondays: 10:00 AM - 17:00
  • Tuesdays: 17:00 – 19:00
  • Wednesday: 17:00 - 19:00
  • Saturday: 17:00 - 19:00

How Long Does a Session Last?
Each session runs about 50 minutes – enough time to make real progress without dragging things out. Most clients come in weekly, but we’ll adjust as needed.

Will You Work With My Psychiatrist or Other Care Providers?
Absolutely! With your written consent, I’m happy to coordinate with your other care providers to ensure you’re getting the best comprehensive care.

Fees and Pricing
My rate is $105 per hour, and I like to keep things simple—no sliding scale right now, just clear and straightforward pricing.

What is a Registered Therapeutic Counsellor (RTC)?

A Registered Therapeutic Counsellor (RTC) is a professional trained in providing therapeutic counselling services, focusing on mental health, emotional well-being, and personal growth. RTCs are members of the Association of Cooperative Counselling Therapists of Canada (ACCT) and adhere to its ethical guidelines.

What Can an RTC Do?

  • Provide individual, couples, and group therapy.
  • Offer support in managing stress, anxiety, depression, and relationship issues.
  • Use therapeutic techniques to promote personal development.

What an RTC Cannot Do:

  • Diagnose mental health disorders.
  • Prescribe medication.
  • Provide psychotherapy in provinces where it is regulated under a different license, such as Ontario, New Brunswick, and Quebec.

Limitations of Counselling: While counselling can offer significant support and growth, it is not a cure-all. Results may vary, and ongoing support or referral to other professionals might be necessary, especially for severe mental health issues.

Key Points for Potential Clients:

  • RTCs are bound by the ACCT Code of Ethics, ensuring responsible and ethical care.
  • Confidentiality is maintained, except in cases where there is a risk of harm or as required by law.
  • Clients should feel empowered to ask questions and discuss their goals and concerns openly.

For more details on the ethical guidelines and scope of practice, you can refer to the ACCT Code of Ethics here.
