Practice Update!

Practice Update: Provisional Psychologist Status, Location Change, and Fee Adjustment

I want to share an important update about my professional status, office location, and session fees. Transparency matters to me, and I believe clients deserve to understand what’s changing, why it’s changing, and how it affects your care.

Registered Provisional Psychologist Status

As of December 9, 2025, I am now a Registered Provisional Psychologist with the College of Alberta Psychologists. This is a meaningful milestone on my path to full registration.

Becoming a provisional psychologist means I have completed the necessary education and initial requirements, and I’m now practicing while I complete the remaining steps toward full registration under the College’s regulatory framework.

College Policy (CAP Standards):
“A registered provisional psychologist must remain under the supervision of a psychologist within the defined mandate of a supervision plan approved by the Registration Approvals Sub-Committee.” College of Alberta College of Alberta Psychologists

In plain English: The College requires that individuals with provisional status work under the ongoing supervision of a fully registered psychologist. You cannot practise independently or hold yourself out as fully licensed during this stage.

This means:

  • My clinical practice is supervised by experienced, fully registered psychologists

  • Structured oversight and feedback are part of every step of my professional work

  • I’m building toward full registration in a way that prioritizes safety and competence

Why the Office Location Changed

Under the College’s standards, a provisional psychologist cannot operate independently or as a sole practitioner unless certain supervisory and structural requirements are met. College of Alberta Psychologists

This means:

  • I must practise in a setting that supports both clinical work and supervision

  • I cannot lease and operate a completely independent practice space without those safeguards

  • My work must be tied to approved supervisory relationships and clinical infrastructure

To remain fully compliant, I have moved my practice from the Atrium Square Building to:

Thrive Business & Wellness Centre
11500 29 St SE #105
Calgary, AB T2Z 3W9

This location supports both high-quality client care and regulatory oversight, ensuring that your sessions remain safe, ethical, and professionally grounded.

Why Session Fees Are Increasing to $140 + GST

The updated session rate of $140 + GST per hour reflects real changes in the cost of providing care at this professional level. Here’s what’s different:

1. Increased Clinic Overhead

Rent at Thrive Business & Wellness Centre is approximately double that of my previous location, and it provides a compliant, professionally supported setting that aligns with College standards.

2. Increased Supervision Costs

As part of my provisional status, I now receive structured supervision from licensed psychologists:

  • One supervisor oversees my overall practice and clinical work with clients aged 14+

  • A second supervisor oversees assessments and clients aged 13 and under

These supervision hours are not optional; they are mandated professional requirements tied to my registration status.

3. Expanded Professional Accountability

Maintaining provisional psychologist status involves:

  • Higher regulatory responsibility

  • Expanded documentation and standards

  • Ongoing competency evaluation

All of this supports safer, more accountable, and higher-quality care, but it increases the cost of practice operations.

What Has Not Changed

While some logistics have shifted, several core things remain the same:

  • My therapeutic approach

  • My commitment to collaborative, grounded, and respectful care

  • The values behind Mindful Mage Counselling

  • My focus on depth, clarity, and practical tools; not rushed sessions

This transition is about professional growth and regulatory alignment, not about distancing from clients or changing the heart of the work. I genuinely hope this path toward full registration enhances the care I’m able to offer you.

A Final Word

I recognize that fee changes can be impactful, and I don’t take that lightly. My goal is to remain transparent, ethical, and sustainable, so that I can continue offering consistent, high-quality care over the long term. I hope this blog post comes off this way to you, the reader.

If you have questions about this transition or how it affects your therapeutic work with me, I’m always open to conversation. Mindful Mage Counselling continues to offer sliding-scale options for those experiencing financial strain due to current global and economic challenges.
